As one of the first smartphones to enable HDR+ photography, Google Pixel phones are reportedly intending to take HDR+ photography a step further with the Google Pixel 8 series.
Kuba Wojciechowski claims that staggered HDR, which enables the sensor to record various exposures simultaneously with the same pixels, would be available in 2023 Pixels. This information was discovered in the source code of the Google Camera Go app.
Long story short, courtesy of Google we got a clean, unobfuscated version of Google Camera Go, that includes references that seemingly confirm that flagship Pixels in 2023 – Husky and Shiba – will support staggered HDR. pic.twitter.com/YdaWTlGznN
The Pixel 7 series employs ISOCELL GN1 sensors at the moment, however, the Samsung camera processor does not allow staggered HDR. The ISOCELL GN2, which is the most recent development in mobile high dynamic range photography, will likely be included in the Google Pixel 8 phones.
Because it produces the same result faster and without the blurring that occurs when the camera moves while capturing the picture, staggered HDR is preferable to standard HDR.
The Pixel Tangor Pro, which is effectively a Pro version of a Pixel Tablet, was also identified in the Go app’s source code. We could see not one but two tablets in the near future as Google has yet to introduce any slates with the Pixel logo.
